Imagine this for a second: If you see a cockroach in your house, you might feel "ugh, get rid of it!" But if you saw a butterfly fluttering near the window, you'd probably feel a little lift of joy. It's interesting, isn't it?
Our reactions are so different, even though both are just insects.
And it makes me wonder... do we have similar instinctive "aesthetic" reactions to business practices?
I believe we do.
I am Mueez Hamdare, and you are reading my blog: Does Morality Have an Aesthetic? - The "Butterfly Effect" of Business Ethics.
We often treat ethics and compliance as checklists, a series of 'dos' and 'don'ts.'
But what if our sense of 'right' and 'wrong' is also driven by something deeper, a sense of beauty, of harmony, a feeling of inherent 'goodness'?
I believe a workplace built on integrity and fairness creates an 'aesthetic' satisfaction, a sense of balance and rightness, much like the delicate beauty of a butterfly.
This isn't just theory. We see it in the 'halo effect': when a company demonstrates ethical behavior, it radiates outwards, influencing how people perceive everything else.
Customers trust more, employees feel pride. And there's the power of 'social proof': when we witness ethical conduct from our colleagues and leaders, it reinforces our own moral compass, creating a positive, self-sustaining cycle.
Ethics isn't just about rules; it's about building a beautiful, harmonious, and ultimately, a better workplace."
Now imagine you and your friends are building a big Lego tower, TOGETHER!
Hardwired for Good: It's like you have a little helper inside your brain that says, "Hey, it feels good to work together!"
You naturally want to share the Lego pieces and help each other.
Why? Because if everyone shares and helps, the tower gets built faster and bigger! That's how our ancestors survived: by working together.
Simple: It's like your brain is pre-set to feel happy when you're kind and fair.
My "Butterfly" Moment at work.

In my role as BDM at Pharmintech Turnkey Solutions Pvt. Ltd. , We are constantly building connections with buyers as well as suppliers.
Recently, I faced a choice. A contract loophole could have snagged a deal anyhow, but it felt…off. It didn’t sit right with my moral values, and I believe, with the values of the company I represent.
We chose transparency, revising the contract.
The client? They signed, expressing deep trust. That's the "butterfly effect".
It also felt instinctively right folks.
I believe that the "Aesthetic" of Ethical work will look like these
• Transparency, not secrets.
• Collaboration, not competition.
• Safe spaces & right decisions for all, not just profits.
Doesn't that feel right? Like a well-composed symphony. la la la la laaaaa !
So, how do we cultivate this "aesthetic" of morality?
• We must embody the ethical values we want to see in our organizations.
• We must create a culture where our colleagues feel comfortable speaking up about their concerns.
• We must provide regular training on right decision-making.
• We must recognize and reward employees who demonstrate integrity in their work.
• We must question ourselves, what are the core values of our company? Do these values reflect a moral compass?
Times up! That’s it for now. I have work to do. Let’s wind up. Peace Out Homies!
What does an "aesthetically" ethical workplace mean to you?
